The Lost Ones © Sue Decker, 2023 All Rights Reserved They all seem lost living on the boulevard When I head down that way, my body stands on guard Drugs, danger, and distress, how’d it get this far? Fear wins the battle in my heart I keep passing by the lost ones Feeling powerless to help someone with a loaded gun No one of us can bear the damage done How did we all become the lost ones? Hottest day of the year, no shade in sight I see a guy in bad shape, his frozen eyes meet mine He spews anger and lashes out, it’s the enemy inside I turn away, hoping he stays alive I keep passing by the lost ones Feeling powerless to help someone with a loaded gun No one of us can bear the damage done How did we all become the lost ones? He’s got a family somewhere sharing the pain I wonder, if she found him, what his mom would say She’d say ‘He’s not a junkie, he’s my precious son, all I can do is pray’ ‘Cause he runs away from any kind of grace I keep passing by the lost ones Feeling powerless to help someone with a loaded gun No one of us can bear the damage done How did we all become the lost ones?

Hummingbird 03:28
Hummingbird © Sue Decker, 2021 All Rights Reserved I saw you after a crazy eight Days of circling that drain Going round and round, round and round You lifted me out of that bitter lockdown I’ve got to have something sweet I’ve got to have something sweet Hummingbird, humming Won’t you keep me company I don’t smoke but my Grandma did I need her here to show me how to live From beyond the grave, beyond the grave Get me some tobacco to bring her back this way I’ve got to have something sweet I’ve got to have something sweet Hummingbird, humming Won’t you keep me company Now it’s two dark trips around the sun But this morning I thought heard your hum Flying home, flying home Need some lovin’ nectar, been down so low, been down so low I’ve got to have something sweet I’ve got to have something sweet Hummingbird, humming Won’t you keep me company

Pretty Words and Flowers © Sue Decker, 2022 All Rights Reserved One more box that I gotta sort through Been putting it off ‘cause I don’t know what to do With the keepsakes from our wedding day I’ve long since let go of the wreckage we made What more can I say? Looking through pictures of me and you 20 years on, we still look like new I thought the edges might be torn I thought all the colors would be worn But we’re young forever more Photographs of summer bouquets Marriage vows left on this page I never thought I’d feel this way I guess pretty words and flowers don’t always fade away My momma made this wedding gown Satin and lace, still white somehow I try it on and it holds me tight I remember our first dance that night We never could keep time All the good wishes from family Friends gathered round, sharing memories In a funny way, it still rings true I’ve forgiven me, I’ve forgiven you Love shines through Photographs of summer bouquets Marriage vows left on this page I never thought I’d feel this way I guess pretty words and flowers don’t always fade away

Nobody’s Mother © Sue Decker, 2022 All Rights Reserved I’m waiting in the back row, for the show to begin Front row’s a family, mom and dad and 3 kids It’s easy to see, they share flesh and blood, My body starts aching to know such love Nobody’s mother, when did that deal go down? How long has God known, not this time around The grieving has started, words fail somehow Nobody’s mother can comfort me now People say I’m lucky, my life is so carefree No 3 am feedings, no messes to clean No Disney vacations, no noise in my home Yes, it’s free of caring, my life is my own Nobody’s mother, when did that deal go down? How long has God known, not this time around The grieving has started, words fail somehow Nobody’s mother can comfort me now It’s not like getting bad news in the mail one day The light slowly fades out, until it’s too late Sitting in the dark now I let the tears flow The movie starts playing, but I watch the front row Nobody’s mother, when did that deal go down? How long has God known, not this time around The grieving has started, words fail somehow Nobody’s mother can comfort me now

Never Asked To Be So Strong © Sue Decker, 2022 All Rights Reserved He’d forgotten what a friend was, used up all his trust An old bar fly, a spectacle, waiting for dust-to-dust He said he toured with the legends, but I’d never seen him play Only drinking and pretending he was back in his glory days Never asked to be so strong He’d sworn off human touch, he didn’t plan to live this long Getting up day after day, while his demons led him on He never, no he never asked to be so strong The music kept him going, always easy with the praise When I played old-time blues up on that open stage One night he finally did get up to play his favourite song But he couldn’t make his fingers work and the words came out all wrong Never asked to be so strong He’d sworn off human touch, he didn’t plan to live this long Getting up day after day, while his demons led him on He never, no he never asked to be so strong I know his name was Frank, and how he helped me shine He wasn’t just crooked hands and a troubled mind I don’t know his story, I’m sure he was no saint But we all deserve real comfort and something to touch the pain Never asked to be so strong He’d sworn off human touch, he didn’t plan to live this long Getting up day after day, while his demons led him on He never, no he never asked to be so strong

Cheatin’ Side of Town © Brian Parsons & Sue Decker, 2013 All Rights Reserved You’re working the cheatin' side of town Drivin' your cab, running around Can't you see your meter has run down ‘Cause you’re working the cheatin' side of town You turned your light on for me babe Opened the door and wouldn’t let me pay Fooled me for a while, but it was just your game I found out you got your light on for all kinds of women babe Maybe there’s a woman who will take your guff It ain’t me, I’ve had enough Good luck finding one that fits your bill, You hear me talking, I never will Working the cheatin' side of town Drivin' your cab, running around Can't you see your meter has run down ‘Cause you’re working the cheatin' side of town Never had a man make me so blue I’m sittin’ in the front seat looking at you This ride’s over honey, we are through Never had a man make me feel so blue Maybe there’s a woman who will take your guff It ain’t me, I’ve had enough Good luck finding one that fits your bill, You hear me talking, I never will Working the cheatin' side of town Drivin' your cab, running around Can't you see your meter has run down ‘Cause you’re working the cheatin' side of town

Love Made for a Lifetime © Sue Decker, 2007 All Rights Reserved They lived and worked all their lives with dignity and compromise Watched their kids and the trees grow up, and their golden years how they flew But then he started losing ground, before too long he was not himself She cared for him the best she could and somewhere deep inside he knew It’s a heartbreak of a lifetime The long goodbye from man to child Love made for a lifetime ‘Cause no matter what, she’s still his wife Came the day she packed his bag, all for the best is what they said Then a car pulled up and he wondered why they left the open door There’s nothing in their sixty years to prepare her for all of this Standing in their doorway explaining where he’s gonna go It’s a heartbreak of a lifetime The long goodbye from man to child Love made for a lifetime ‘Cause no matter what, she’s still his wife She lays awake most every night, wondering how the strength will come Tonight she rises from her bed and makes her way downstairs She finds him in the photos there, all the memories they had shared All the times he was so proud, his kindness and his grace It’s a heartbreak of a lifetime The long goodbye from man to child Love made for a lifetime ‘Cause no matter what, she’s still his wife
